NONTHEIST, KNOW THYSELF! DEFINING TERMS AND CLARIFYING POSITIONS

Image
In this article, I aim to differentiate between all the various positions that can be classified as 'nontheism' and also throw in some theist positions for clarity. I am doing this because of the ceaseless debates about what the term 'atheism' really means, and I would like to contribute to solving the problem. This, I believe, will help with ease of identification. The definitions will be cast in terms of the  kind  of claims that anyone identifying with the position would make. Thus, they are not exhaustive but representative.  For the sake of simplicity, this article will use "God" to mean any god at all, either in a monotheistic or polytheistic sense. Here we go! Theist "I believe that God exists." "I am confident that God exists." "I believe it is vastly more probable that God exists." Atheist "I believe that God does not exist." "I am confident that God does not exist." "I believe it is vastly more p

HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD - A PERSONAL ASSESSMENT

It was sometime in the summer of 2010. My university was on my third-year first-semester break, so I had come home for the holiday. A young, vibrant choir boy who had learnt about "new creation realities" in my campus fellowship and wanted to be a better Christian, I prayed fairly frequently during that time.  One afternoon during that holiday, I was praying and meditating in my room about how to become more "spiritually mature." I whined to God about how I was not growing spiritually, how I wanted to "do more exploits" for the Kingdom. And suddenly, I heard a voice telling me these exact words: "Spiritual maturity is gradual!" Exactly like that!  It was so vivid, I thought somebody else was in the room, and I got up and turned around.   It really was that vivid to me! It wasn't a special, earth-shattering voice. It was, rather, a very human-like but reassuring one. I surmised that it was God who had spoken to me and thanked him for answering

THE ARGUMENT FROM INTELLIGENT DESIGN - JUST ANOTHER "GOD OF THE GAPS" REASONING?

Some Christian apologists and theologians claim that the order in the universe is evidence of an intelligent designer — which, of course, is their very specific Christian God. But could this reasoning amount to just another 'God of the gaps' argument? I have one reason to think so. Christians, including Jesus, believe(d) that disorder in the world (sickness, for example) is as a result of an intelligent mischief maker — the devil or demons. This is a belief that is fundamental to teachings about the divinity of Jesus and the potency of the Christian faith and therefore is no fringe theory. For example, the Bible tells of Jesus speaking about a woman who had what seems to fit the description of a hunch back as having been bound by Satan for 18 years (Luke 13:16). However, we now know the pathology of most sicknesses. Science has revealed how they work, and it is crystal clear that there is no spiritual input in any pathogenic disease we have studied thus far. There is no

RELIGIOUS MISHAPS AND RITUAL KILLINGS: WHAT THEISTS ARE NOT (BUT SHOULD BE) DOING

Image
"This, to me, is the true horror of religion. It allows perfectly decent and sane people to believe by the billions what only lunatics would believe on their own. If you wake up tomorrow thinking that saying a few Latin words over your pancakes is going to turn them into the body of Elvis Presley, you have lost your mind. But if you think pretty much the same about a cracker and the body of Jesus, you’re just a Catholic." - Sam Harris. Yesterday, I read about the death of a certain Kayode Badru on social media. Mr Badru had allegedly died in Gbagada General Hospital after he was inadvertently set ablaze during a prayer session in a Celestial Church of Christ. According to reports, Mr Badru had been soaked in inflammable perfume "from hair to toe" and had candles lit around him when he caught fire and got burnt.  This unfortunate incident happens just a few days after the tragic murder of Iniubong 'Hiny' Umoren, a young fresh graduate who was only looking f

CIRCULAR LOGIC: USING THE BIBLE TO PROVE THE BIBLE'S CLAIMS

Image
A dog chasing its own tail. Credit: Wikimedia Commons Circular reasoning is a well-known informal fallacy that takes the form "A is true because B, which is true because A." It assumes to be true that which ought to be demonstrated to be true by the argument. It is bad reasoning because it's not very good reasoning. (See what I did there?) It is a shortcut hack that can be very appealing to people who have a deeply ingrained commitment to the truth of the belief they are expressing. One of the commonest examples of circular logic in pop conversations is when religious people claim the Bible is true (or is the inerrant, infallible word of God) because the Bible itself says so, thus assuming that the Bible is true upfront. This is not very good reasoning because it assumes to be true (that the Bible is true) that which ought to be demonstrated to be true (that the Bible is true).  A recent  thread on Twitter aimed to show that this well-acclaimed logical fallacy is, some

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's January 1st of 2021. And I'm almost sure you read that with a sigh. Of course, the sigh itself would be based upon an illusion. One of my former mentors said, back in 2010, that "time is a continuum." It was the first time I had come across that quote, and it has stuck with me ever since.  The concept of years is a useful fiction. Yet, there is a sense in which a sigh of relief is warranted at the thought of 2020 being over. As everyone knows all too well, 2020 was a very crazy year indeed. More people died last year than in the previous one , and the COVID-19 pandemic plunged the entire world into recession . And notably in Nigeria, there were the #EndSARS protests, climaxing in that tragic night when our own government, who swore to protect us, opened fire on unarmed and unaggressive citizens demanding change in the country. "Chaotic" doesn't begin to capture the year.  Due to this, there is probably not so much optimism for a lot of people going
